Home Rescue: Jane and Peter's kitchen transformation in Lucan
Jane and Peter needed a family space that was also accessible. Here's how Dee Coleman and the Cash & Carry Kitchens team helped make their dream a reality.

Jane and Peter's old kitchen
Jane and Peter live in Lucan with their two children. Peter lost his left arm in an industrial accident some years back. However, their home was never adapted to meet his needs and remained inaccessible and filled with clutter. Home Rescue's Dee Coleman, along with Cash & Carry Kitchens' own expert kitchen designer Aaron Sheridan, created a kitchen with some ingenious solutions that would meet Peter's unique needs, while also serving as a family space for everyone else.

Jane and Peter's new kitchen
The new kitchen is a u-shaped kitchen, which incorporates a peninsula. There's also a wall of full-height storage. Dee talks us through the design process while Jane and Peter tell us about their favourite features.

A Dereham Taupe kitchen
The Dereham Taupe is from Cash & Carry Kitchens' new 2024 range. "It has that classic aesthetic", explains Dee. "It not only has a shaker-style door, it also has that wood texture. It has that timeless but also very practical finish for a busy family". The taupe colour was also an important consideration for Dee: "the light colour means that this north-facing kitchen feels bright and warm". "The quality is fabulous", says Jane. "It's elegant and sophisticated. It's beautifully made".

Storage
"The old kitchen had very little storage", Jane tells us. "I was tripping over things. There was nowhere for anything". Dee and the team were determined to solve this problem. "I decided to go for full-height storage units for food. We have a beautiful swing larder which makes getting hold of your dry goods really quick and easy". The units also house the full-height fridge and freezer, along with shelving. "That is all of your storage needs very close to your prep space", says Dee.

Accessibility
Due to Peter's disability, accessibility was key for the family. Every element had to be carefully thought out, including the tap. Dee explains why: "The risk is with a hot and cold tap separately you can scald yourself. Here, we have a mono-block. It's thermostatic and it's single-lever. This means the temperature is always where you want it to be. You won't get scalded". Jane tells us that now "everything is super accessible. Every little detail has been thought of".

The end result
"Not putting too fine a point on it, it's going to change our family's lives", says Jane. "It feels already like it's the new heart of our home". Peter doesn't have much to add, noting that the kids will love it. "This is totally different, we have space to share food, space to share music, space to cook". concludes Jane.
