Home Rescue: Monica's kitchen transformation in Swords

Monica needed a kitchen with enough space for her to prepare and serve up delicious home-cooked meals for her entire extended family. Here's how Dee Coleman and the Cash & Carry Kitchens team helped make her dream a reality.

Monica's old kitchen

Monica had lived in her Swords three-bed semi since the 1980s. But her children had long since moved out while her husband sadly passed away some years ago. In that time, the house became hopelessly cluttered with all kinds of bric-a-brac. So, while Monica loved to cook for her entire extended family, they never had any space to sit in her chaotic kitchen. Home Rescue's Dee Coleman, along with Cash & Carry Kitchens' own expert kitchen designer Aaron Sheridan, set out to design a kitchen that would give Monica the space to cook and entertain once again.

Monica's new kitchen

Determined to restore Monica’s home as an ‘open house’ for the whole family, designer Dee envisaged a u-shaped, ‘diner-style’ kitchen. Dee talks us through the design process while Monica tells us about her favourite features.

An Oslo Sage kitchen

The Oslo Sage is from Cash & Carry Kitchens' new 2024 range. This is a one-piece narrow frame shaker-style door with a sleek and modern appearance. Dee explains that: "instead of being just a normal shaker, there's a little chamfer, which means a softening on the edge of the frame". She's also a fan of the matte finish: "One of the things I love about it, is that it kind of looks like it is hand-painted". Knobs and handles are always an important finishing touch in a kitchen. Dee wanted something that would blend with the sage green, so she opted for brushed brass. "I love the colour", says Monica. "The countertops are amazing".

Cooking Facilities

Monica enjoys cooking for her grandchildren. So, she loves the ovens and hob. Dee points out another appliance that will help when she's preparing food - the Faber Omnia Telescopic hood. "The extractor is really sleek," she explains. "It is concealed behind all the other units at the same level. So, rather than having anything protruding, it's flush and integrated".

Washing-up

An inevitable by-product of all Monica's homemade cooking is the washing-up! But the new kitchen means that that chore has become much easier. "I love the tap", says Dee. "It's a commercial spray tap and I can imagine putting great big greasy dishes in here and spraying them off. It really is like something you'd see in a restaurant". And it's not just the dishes that have to be washed, there's laundry too. "The washer-dryer, that's a big thing for me", says Monica. "Because trying to get clothes dry is a nightmare in the winter".

The end result

"It's just amazing", says Monica. "I feel someone was able to read my mind and just have it the way that I would like". She continues: "It's absolutely beautiful, I love it all".
