Customer Story: The Tattans’ Augusta Midnight Blue Kitchen
How the Tattans revamped their space to create an exquisite kitchen to better suit their lifestyle and maximise space.
The Tattans’ Augusta Midnight Blue Kitchen
The Tattans decided it was time for a change. However, they wanted to work some of their existing features into their new kitchen design. They had a door from the previous layout in which they wanted to seamlessly integrate into the new plans. They also wanted to maximise their space efficiently while enjoying all the benefits of their tranquil outdoor views. The Tattans began their journey with a visit to the Tramore Road Showroom, Cork. They booked and completed a free design consultation with Declan Hennessy, our expert designer. Declan talks us through the process below, highlighting the key features of the Tattans’ striking Augusta Midnight Blue Kitchen.

The New Kitchen
"Renovating and putting in a new kitchen always has its oddities", Declan tells us. "You are working at times with existing electrical and plumbing locations, but you may want to update the design to better suit the client's lifestyle. The Tattans wanted a rich door style to complement their bright and airy space. The kitchen door from the previous layout was a “must keep”. Declan elaborates: "Working the door into the design was a must to maximise the space. It was my client Tom’s idea to paint the door the same colour as the striking blue kitchen so that it would blend right into the layout".
The kitchen door was an original feature which was painted the midnight blue colour
Storage
"The large saucepan drawers left and right of the oven and hob are particularly beneficial in having function in the kitchen", says Declan. "These 900-wide pull-out drawers are heavy duty, soft close drawers and give easy reach and organised access to all pots, pans, plates, and anything required for practical kitchen use".
Drawers give easy access to all the pots and pans
Mixing Metals
The Tattans chose elegant accessories in a variety of mixed metals. This drew on the nautical ambience which is fitting for this coastal property in East Cork. Touches of copper were introduced with the tap, handles and lighting. This contrasts with black extractor fan. The elements of white and glass throughout helped tie together the maritime vibe.

Glass Cabinets
The Tattans opted for distinctive glass cabinets in the Augusta Midnight Blue kitchen. The simple but stylish design was a key feature in brightening the space. As well as optimising storage space, these glass cabinets opened up the kitchen and let light in. Dark cabinet colours can be heavy if you don’t find ways to incorporate light. Glass is the perfect way to do so efficiently.

Extended Worktops
The Tattans had a fixed floor height window which we wanted to redeem in the design. The decision was made to extend the worktop and include stools. We have a wide range of worktops that are hard-wearing and work in traditional and contemporary kitchens. The client wanted this spot to take advantage of the views of the tranquil outdoors. "It would have been a shame to not have a calm spot for a morning coffee", explains Declan. "My client Tom really wanted this spot for reflection in his home".

Dark Door Style Kitchens
Our expert designers offer an array of practical and helpful tips to customers who are thinking of a dark door style. The trick is to combine the richness of the dark tones with light features. For example the use of whites, wood and touches of glass.
The important element is to find a balance. If you have chosen wall presses consider glass panels and lighting, be it on the press interiors or the exterior. Lighting is a powerful tool to brighten any aesthetic. The Tattans wanted lighting within the glass cabinets, pendants over the table (with copper detail finish) and LED spot lighting in the ceiling. This in turn provides plenty of light sources for a dark door-style kitchen.
Consider adding elements of lighting, white, wood and glass to brighten your kitchen when choosing a dark style door
Styling
Declan took on board the Tattans' taste when designing the kitchen. "All of the styling really came down to my client's taste", he says. "Tom knew he was after the copper touches and he finished off the kitchen perfectly with his styling from the copper handles and taps to the small appliances, I think it’s a very elevated home".
